MEDIAL COLLATERAL LIGAMENT INJURY

Q: During a recent football game, I sustained a partial MCL tear. My doctor has advised me that surgery is probably not necessary. Will I ever be able to return to football?

A: For most partial medial collateral ligament ruptures, non-surgical treatment is the way to go. Most people have full recovery, and return to the level of activity they had before the injury. In addition, the long term outlook is very good. I wouldn't give up your career aspirations to the NFL just yet. However, take it easy when returning to activity, to avoid re-injury.
