Q: What is the best way to treat a Grade III Acromioclavicular Separation?
A: The vast majority of acromioclavicular separations of all magnitudes are managed conservatively, without surgery. Most patients will be satisfied with the results. However, some complications may persist:
Difficulty with overhead activities
Decreased strength in the affected arm
Problems with cosmetic appearance: the distal end of the affected clavical may continue to bulge up
Note that athletes who are involved in overhead throwing may have different results, and should seek the guidance of an experienced physician.
