Differential Diagnosis

  1. Rib Fracture or Contusion

  2. Referred pain from the Thoracic Spine

  3. Sternoclavicular Joint Disorders


Less Common

  1. Costochondritis

  2. Sternocostal Joint Sprain

  3. Intercostal Muscle Strain

  4. Rib Stress Fractures

  5. Fractured Sternum


Not to be Missed

  1. Cardiac Chest Pain

  2. Peptic Ulcers

  3. Gastroesophageal Reflux

  4. Pneumothorax

  5. Herpes Zoster

  6. Pulmonary Embolism

Inspection


  1. From Behind

  2. From the Front

  3. From Each Side



Palpation


  1. Chest wall for Painful areas

  2. Palpate abdomen for tenderness


Auscultation



Investigations


  1. Chest Xray: To look for pneumothorax, rib fracture, heart size.

  2. EKG:

  3. Gastroscopy: If gastroesophageal reflux is suspected.
